JAMAICA ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: February 28th – March 6th, 2015

EDNA MANLEY COLLEGE, PATRICK BROWN TOP AWARD NOMINATIONS—03/01/15
The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts has garnered the most nominations in the categories considered for the 2015 Actor Boy awards. The college received a total of 22 nominations. Nominations were given for Best Drama and Best Musical, among others. “Saving Alligator High” from Jambiz Productions received the most nominations for a single work with 12. This production was written by Patrick Brown and re-imagines the realities of Jamaica’s school system.

I-OCTANE PERFORMS IN AFRICA FOR THE FIRST TIME—03/02/15
I-Octane, Jamaican reggae and dancehall star, is ready to travel to Africa for the first time. He will perform
in Bakau, Gambia, on March 6, 2015. The event has been organized by Katato Entertainment and is meant to be the official launch of T Smaltz’s double EP. The trip has been characterized as a mystic journey for I-Octane that will help him get in touch with the past and pay respects to his African ancestors.

NATIONAL GALLERY HONORS ANNABELLA PROUDLOCK—03/03/15
The artist, collector, and art patron, Annabella Proudlock, received recognition from the National Gallery of Jamaica. Proudlock died on February 14, 2015; she was managing director of Harmony Hall at the time. She had also served as board member for the National Gallery. Born in Wales, she moved to Jamaica in 1966 and worked with Operation Friendship as a school teacher and fund raiser. She was instrumental in the restoration of Harmony Hall in St. Mary, which is now a national monument.

13 WRITER/DIRECTORS CHOSEN TO SCREEN FILMS FOR 2015 FESTIVAL—03/05/15
The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) has chosen 13 Jamaican writers/directors to show their films at the 2015 Jamaica Film Festival. The event will take place from July 7 to July 11, 2015 in Kingston. Those chosen include Gerald “RasKassa” Hynes, Chris Browne, Dahlia Harris, and Aston Cooke. Shauna Chin, an actress based in Jamaica and Hollywood and who debuted on “Criminal Minds” on CBS recently, will also participate in the event.
